A drug user from Stranraer who was seen in public inhaling butane gas from an aerosol can he had hidden up his sleeve should be receiving help for his
addiction, a sheriff said this week.

Paul White, 40, of 74 McDowall Drive, was spied by CCTV camera operators inhaling the gas on November 8 at Castle Square in Stranraer at around 11.15am.

The court heard there were lots of shoppers around, including children, and that White had been struggling with a drug addiction for 25 years.

Lawyer Paul Feeney, defending, said White was keen to get off his addiction but that solvent abuse is “1980s stuff” and there is little that can be done for such addicts.

But Sheriff Alastair Carmichael said he wished to defer sentence for reports from drug agencies to clarify what can be done to rehabilitate White. He will return to court on May 2.
