Payback order for
£10,000 fraudster

A 23-year-old Castle Kennedy woman who claimed illegal benefit of £10,000 over two years was ordered to do 275 hours of unpaid work by a sheriff at Stranraer Court on Tuesday.

Beresford obtained £5577.55 of income support and £4867.07 of housing and council tax benefits between September 2010 and July 2012 by claiming she was living on her own when she was in fact living with her partner Richard Todd.

Defending, solicitor Michael Kilkerr said that this was a serious matter that “struck at the heart of the benefits system” but the family had been paying money back to the authorities defrauded.

Sheriff Carmichael also put Beresford on supervision for two years.
