The Wigtown poultry show is hoping to attract new exhibitors this year with even more classes for those who do not keep poultry.
The most classes will still be for poultry, with large fowl and bantam breeds ranging from minute Seramas to huge Brahmas – like the show winner last year.
Keeping waterfowl is currently very popular and the tiny Call ducks are always a major attraction in the poultry marquee. They truly are real little ‘bathtub’ ducks. With geese and turkeys also exhibited Wigtown show has one of the largest ranges of domestic fowl on display in South West Scotland.
Anyone can enjoy being part of the show by entering the photography, painting, greetings card or new for this year, handicrafts and flower arranging in the poultry marquee. We haven’t forgotten that it is a poultry show and all these exhibits have to be on a poultry theme. The egg cosies can be of any subject and are apparently proving very popular with knitting patterns being downloaded from the Internet on a regular basis.
This year the themes for the decorated and painted eggs are Glasgow Commonwealth Games, James Bond or a tartan designed from the colouring and markings of a pure breed of poultry. There could well be a few wet weekends between now and the show, which takes place on 6 August 2014, so why not blow an egg and spend some creative time making a winning exhibit? You could find yourself on championship row, being awarded a rosette and maybe even a trophy.
To fund the running of the poultry show a prize bingo evening is being held in the Main Hall, County Building, Wigtown on Wednesday 9 April 2014 at 7.30pm. Some wonderful prizes have already been donated, including a horse riding lesson at Calgow, vouchers from the Co-op and Crown Hotel, Newton Stewart, plus many, many more. The Wigtown poultry show committee would like to thank the Machars Lions Club for very generously supporting and running the bingo and it is hoped that as many people as possible will attend.
Copies of the schedule will be at the bingo evening and from Cults Farmhouse, Whithorn, tel: 01988 600763 Email: firstname.lastname@example.org or can be downloaded from www.wigtownshow.org.uk
