MSP fears for armed officers in region

Commenting on last week’s news that police officers in the Highlands will be armed, Scottish Liberal Democrat South Scotland MSP Jim Hume said this week should the idea spread to Galloway, he would be strongly opposed.

He said: “This time last year we were told that officers in Dumfries and Galloway were to be routinely armed. Thankfully, incidents involving an armed response unit across the south west have been relatively few with just eighteen call outs since between 2007 and 2013, but despite that low figure and with no community consultation, the decision was taken as long as a year ago to arm officers across the south west.

“This is a deeply ominous reflection of the new look Police Scotland.

“This creeping move toward firearms becoming a regular feature on our streets is an extremely worrying development and is a world away from the previously successful community policing before the SNP’s centralist reforms.”
