Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Alex Fergusson showed his support for the Tesco National Food Collection last Friday by donating a basket of food at the Castle Douglas store.

Speaking after talking to the volunteer staff members who were manning the collection stall, Mr Fergusson said: “It is a sad fact that the number of people turning to food banks over the past 12 months has almost tripled, so I congratulate Tesco for organising this National Food Collection weekend in conjunction with the Trussell Trust and Fair Share.

“Last year the initiative provided 2.4 million meals across the UK, and I have no doubt that this year’s total will be even greater if the enthusiastic participation of the customers at the Castle Douglas store is anything to go by.

“The staff mirrored that enthusiasm, and I can only congratulate everyone involved for a job really well done.”
