NHS Dumfries and Galloway’s maternity services team is celebrating figures released this week showing it has overseen the highest number of natural births in Scotland.
Since 2009 midwives have been working with the wider team to “help support women to have the best birth experience that they can, resulting in more women giving birth naturally,” said the NHS.
This has resulted in 70% of all births being natural, the highest rate in Scotland for almost 20 years.
Consultant midwife Karen King has been part of the team from the start.
She said: “It has been almost 20 years since we have seen so many women giving birth spontaneously and that’s great news for mums and babies.
“We now have the highest rate in Scotland. That’s down to listening to what mums want and making sure the care they receive takes account of all their needs.
“We also take a person-centred approach with staff they feel valued and driven to provide a high standard of care.
“As a result we regularly report patient satisfaction levels above the Scottish Government target of 95%.
“The team has done a great job and I’m sure that we will continue to work hard to give all the women and families we care for the best possible birth experience and start in life.”
