Make a splash for charity

GOOD sports are being sought to take the plunge for charity.

The Marie Curie Cancer Care Machars Fundraising Group is holding a new event on April 28 and 29 and wants local people to take part.

This event is supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council and will take place at the Merrick swimming pool in Newton Stewart. Participants will be asked to register to take part in the event no later than April 21 and places are limited to first come, first reserved.

Participants can choose to do a timed challenge during which they can opt to swim a challenging amount of lengths within a time limit, or participants can choose to swim a number of lengths that they feel comfortable with without being timed. There is also have the group challenge in which up to five people in one group swim a challenging amount of lengths over the two days.

Participants will be asked to pay a registration fee, which is half price during March, and each participant will also be asked to collect sponsorship. All money raised is kept locally to support Marie Curie Nursing Service.

If you’re not in to swim, why not pop up on Saturday, April 28, from 11-4.30 and the following day from noon to 3pm when volunteers will be serving teas, coffees and home baking.

Local volunteer Jayne Whannel said: “This is new event for our fundraising team and we have been working closely with the staff at the Merrick pool. We are hoping this event will be successful and people will sign up to support our local Marie Curie nurses.”
