LAST week the Machars Lions handed out their largest ever set of donations in a ceremony in the Monreith Arms, Port William.
The proceeds of their 17th Annual Golf Tournament raised a staggering £2200, mostly thanks to the generosity of local businesses who always rally round this event. The idea for this event was brought from Montego Bay (Jamaica) Lions when the late Ian Mason transferred to the Machars in the 1990’s. The Lions then topped up the amount with a further £1800 of their fundraising from the regular and popular Monday and Friday evening Cash Bingo sessions.
Each Lion is allowed to nominate beneficiaries and, on the evening representatives of the eclectic mix of 22 recipients each gave a brief description of their work.
Lion Annie Murray nominated Wigtown Cancer Support Group, represented by Anne Kelly, and Whithorn Good Will Fund, Hazel Murphy.
