In the wake of the biggest Scottish sporting achivement of recent years as Andy Murray lifted that all-important trophy, Galloway can boast its own links to the Wimbledon winner.
For Andy’s great grandparents, Andrew Erskine and Isabelle Stewart-Scott, were married in Newton Stewart in 1924.
The discovery came to light this week after a Newton Stewart resident was researching his own Erskine family tree and stumbled upon this nugget of history.
Although not related, Mr Erskine was delighted to discover the town’s links. Andy’s great grandfather was a pharmacist and hisgreat grandmother was a telephonist before the pair were wed on 8 February 1924 at the old St John’s Church (now Newton Stewart Museum) by minister James M Inglis.
Their reason for being in Newton Stewart is not clear but they soon moved to Aberdeenshire and started a family, resulting in granddaughter Judy - Andy’s beloved mother.
