Life term for Hazel’s killer

The man who murdered a Stranraer girl before burying her in a Kilmarnock park has been jailed for a minimum of 20 years.

John Davis, 26, carried out a “brutal and sustained assault” on Hazel North, his ex girlfriend who latterly lived in Dumfermile, at his flat in Kilmarnock in March.

He then buried her body in a shallow grave nearby.

Passing sentence at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday, judge Lord Rae described the murder as “wholly motiveless”.

In a statement outside court, her brother Michael said nothing would bring Hazel back but asked people to remember her for who she was and “her beautiful smile and not the tragedy that ended her life.”

Miss North, who is believed to have lay dying for up to 18 hours, was reported missing three weeks before her body was found.

Davis handed himself into police and showed them where he had buried her.
