Library consultation in Whithorn tomorrow

Officers from Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Community and Customer Services team will consult with customers about changes planned for of Whithorn Library tomorrow, Thursday, March 6, between 3.30pm and 4.30pm.

Council officers have been meeting library users region-wide this week as part of the consultation process over the continued integration of libraries, registration and customer services. Changes, including cutting opening hours, have been agreed by Dumfries and Galloway Council as part of their budget for 2014/15.

A council spokesman said: “For many communities, this will mean that where a visit was required to two or three different premises to access information, borrow a book or use a computer, there will now be one facility delivering all of these services.

“In these locations, because we are bringing together three services we will look to create consistent and specific opening hours for each facility and community. In nine of our smaller communities, where there is currently a Library but no Customer Service Centre, we are improving and enhancing the range of services available to include customer services and where possible registration.

“Dumfries and Galloway Council is not removing services from communities, however in some instances reductions in opening hours and changes to service delivery have to be made to ensure that our facilities remain vibrant, busy and sustainable for future years.

“Community and Customer Services Committee agreed a more robust community communication and consultation process at its meeting of 18 February and as a result of this a series of open events are being held to communicate the proposals to those communities where services will change.”
