A man who, by his own admission “knows nothing about the industry” has just won a national award for his innovative Ladderlimb DIY tool.
The cream of the DIY and gardening industry were gathered at the Deansgate Hilton in Manchaester on Tuesday night for the DIY Week magazine’s annual awards and Alistair Taylor from New Luce was the outstanding winner the ‘handtool of the year’ category having invented the godsend for the nation’s painters and decorators only two years ago.
The judges commented: ““This is one of those brilliant “Why did nobody think of it before?” ideas. For the user, it provides real benefits in terms of safety and convenience, and for the retailer, it’s a valuable extra sale. A real win/win – and a worthy Gold Winner in this category!”
Fifty-four-year old Alistair, who came up with the idea after dropping a tin a paint on the kitchen floor, attended the award ceremony with his family, including son David, who gave up his job in the financial sector to take on the marketing duties when demand for Ladderlimb increased dramatically during the past six months.
Yesterday a still stunned Alistair said: “What a night. I am totally shattered! It was a complete surprise when we won although I did think we had a really good chance.
“It’s amazing that someone like me can win the top prize in an industry I have nothing to do with. We got one of the biggest rounds of applause when we collected the award! There were over 200 movers and shakers for the DIY industry there.
“Lots of them didn’t know who we were but they do now. I now have a long list of people to phone!”
DIY Week editor Fiona Hodge said: “From my point of view, it is a great product with a great story behind it.
“Ladderlimb was a worthy winner in the Hand Tool category and it was impressive to see such a small, relatively unknown brand beat off competition from big brands, including Irwin and Stanley.
“The product categories at the DIY Week Awards are about rewarding innovation and Ladderlimb certainly fits that criteria. It was great to meet the Taylors and celebrate their success on the night. They were great fun and seemed to be having a fantastic night. I wish them every success and, in fact, Alistair assured me they would be back with new products to enter the awards again next year, so I look forward to that.”
