Labour continue challege of SNP over bedroom tax

Galloway MP Russell Brown has challenged local SNP MSPs to back a bill lodged in the Scottish Parliament that would fully mitigate the effects of the bedroom tax.

The members bill, introduced by Labour MSP Jackie Baillie, would introduce a statutory no-eviction guarantee for tenants who fall into arrears solely due to the “bedroom tax”.

The final proposal of the legislation was formally lodged last Thursday after a three month consultation which saw 82 percent of respondents support the bill. The bill will now go through the legislative process in the Scottish Parliament.

Russell Brown MP said: “The Labour Party has already pledged to scrap the bedroom tax if elected in 2015. However, that will seem too far away for local people who fear losing their homes thanks to the bedroom tax. Passing this bill would give local people peace of mind. That is why our two local SNP MSPs should support this bill. At our own council, party differences were set aside as the SNP group worked with the Labour group to oppose the bedroom tax. I hope the SNP MSPs will do the same.”
