A joiner from Kirkcudbright has been shortlisted in the annual search by Screwfix to find and reward Britain’s Top Tradesman.

Katie Redden, 29, has seen off competition from tradesmen and women across the region, and is now in with a chance of getting through to the national final where one person will win the title, along with a brand new Toyota PROACE van worth £27,000.

Katie, who works for Dumfries and Galloway Council, will compete against other finalists from across the region, and thinks her passion and dedication for the trade will help her to stand out and impress the judges.

Katie said: “I am delighted to have been chosen to compete in the Scottish heat of the competition. I realised I wanted to become a joiner after leaving college and working with a furniture maker part-time. In 2010/11 I won both the Scottish and National Apprentice of the Year competition, so winning Britain’s Top Tradesman this year would be the icing on the cake.”

Screwfix marketing director John Mewett said: “It’s the fourth year Screwfix has searched the nation to find Britain’s Top Tradesman, and every year the standard gets higher, especially as last year’s winner came from Scotland.

“The award is only given to those who can prove they excel in their business, and Katie is an example of this due to her passion for the industry. Along with our other finalists, she has demonstrated her willingness to go the extra mile to get the job done. It’s certainly going to be no easy task to pick the winner who will go through to the national final in Wembley.”

The heat in Scotland will take place at the Glasgow Screwfix store at Possil Park on October 14. Katie will take part in a number of tasks to find out if she’s got what it takes to be crowned the regional winner.
