Local artist Hazel Campbell, from Castle Douglas, joined the Scottish Tourism Minister and representatives from VisitScotland in the United States and Canada as part of the country’s Scotland Week celebrations, with a special emphasis on the country’s creative industries in the Year of Creative Scotland 2012.
s one of VisitScotland’s Creative Scots, Hazel joined VisitScotland on a media tour of North America last week, giving interviews and participating in press events in Toronto and New York. The events were designed to showcase the rich creativity of the Scots and the world class nature of Scotland’s cultural offering.
Hazel said: “I am delighted to be invited by VisitScotland to promote the creative side of Scotland and proud to also represent Dumfries and Galloway in America at Scotland week. Our area has such an abundance of different creative things to see and do, from fantastic galleries and museums to holidaying experiences based around arts and photography.
“Scotland has such a vast amount of talent and activities when it comes to being creative. I am looking forward to sharing my passion for painting and our wonderful region in America.”
Hazel has lived and worked in Galloway for most of her adult life, and uses the local countryside as a stimulus for landscape painting.
Hazel runs painting schools during the summer from her studio on the family farm. These are proving to be very popular, with her students having scope to paint in the adjoining garden and surrounding countryside.

“We have some exciting times to look forward to over the next few years. During 2013’s Year of Natural Scotland, we celebrate our country’s outstanding landscape and natural beauty. Then, in 2014, we welcome the world to join us in the celebration of our second year of Homecoming which takes place in a year when Scotland is taking centre stage in world terms as host of the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup. “
Scotland Week was part of the ongoing programme of targeted engagement in North America by Team Scotland – the Scottish Government, VisitScotland and Scottish Development International.
VisitScotland, in partnership with Creative Scotland, is working to promote Scotland as a world-class cultural and creative destination throughout the Year of Creative Scotland 2012. This year marks the third of four focus years leading to the second year of Homecoming in 2014.
