THIS week’s historic picture was kindly given to The Galloway Gazette by Mrs Jean Gaw from Port William and shows Her Majesty the Queen visiting Stranraer Show in 1956.
In the photograph, Her Majesty is seen presenting a long service medal to Sidney Adair who worked with Jean’s father Willie Wallace at the Low Clone Farm, Port William, for many years. Sidney’s son, also called Sidney, contacted The Galloway Gazette from his home in Nigeria to see if we could trace the picture. He still reads The Gazette online every week.
Also in the picture are Jimmy Thomson, Willie Brown, Fergie Milroy, Sanny Nicholson, Lord Stair and Jack Hunter. This year’s Stranraer show will take place in the London Road Rugby Ground this coming Wednesday while Royalty will be attending the following week’s Wigtown Show when HRH The Princess Royal will visit Bladnoch Park to mark Wigtown Agricultural Society’s 200th anniversary.
