THE time of year is here yet again for a fun-filled week for all the family from The Galloway Pageant.
Why not get the family together and have a go at the window spotting or you could flex your brains at the sports quiz or see how well you know Newton Stewart with the Pageant Photo Quiz or have a blast and try them all. All these fun activities come before the gala even starts!
The Queen Elect who will be sashed as the new Queen of Galloway for 2012/13 is Megan Steele. Megan is 15 and attends the Douglas Ewart High School, she goes to various clubs in Newton Stewart which include the Newton Stewart Junior Players, the Youth Fellowship and Galloway Thistle. Megan is making history when she gets crowned Queen of Galloway as 79 years ago her Great Aunt, Annie McKay was crowned the very first Queen of Galloway and that’s when the Galloway Pageant was introduced to the locals.
The Galloway Pageant kicks off on Sunday 22nd of July with Grand Challenge Football Sevens Tournament where you can go and watch local and visiting teams play it out for the Round Table Golden Jubilee Charity Cup. Then there is a chance for the whole family to get together and solve the clues to the Family Treasure Hunt. After that head to Creebridge for the Sashing of the Queen Elect where there is fun for everyone with a Magician, Bouncy Castle, Inflatable Slide, Rodeo Cow, Bungee Run, Douglas the Clown and Fun and Games but don’t worry you won’t go hungry as there will be burgers and hot dogs on sale as well as juice and crisps. Then end the first day of the week at the “Skinny Sing-Along” Karaoke in memory of Mark Milligan (Skinny) at the Central Bar.
Monday 23rd of July sees some of the most loved events such as the Baby Show, Beetle Drive and Nuts Poker Night but also the return of an old favourite, Saints and Sinners Football Tournament, where the police will take on the local boys and battle it out to see who really is the fittest.
Tuesday 24th of July sees the kids have fun at the sports then they can put on their best outfits and head to the disco while the parents go to the darts.
Then half way through the week on Wednesday 25th of July it is time for the pets to shine in the Pet Show. Then that night it’s the Under 14’s and Adults Football, the “Two Bowl” competition and the Car Treasure Hunt where you can try and solve the clues then afterwards have a burger.
Thursday 26th of July sees more fun for the kids at the Teddy Bear’s Picnic where you can bring along a picnic for the family and don’t forget to dress up your teddies and try and win a prize. Then at night you can either dust of your fishing rod, pool cue or your bingo board and head to the angling, pool or bingo, the choice is yours!
Friday 27th of July and Pageant Day is nearly here but first you can head to the Open Golf Competition then at night test your general knowledge at the Pub Quiz.
Then the day we have all been waiting for has finally come, IT’S PAGEANT DAY! Pageant Day will begin at 11.30 am with the decorated vehicles at Minnigaff, the decorated vehicles will meet here and the Pageant Pop-Along will be held at Douglas Park due to Minnigaff Park being re-surfaced, we apologise for any inconvience and hope we can resolve this problem in the future. At 12.00 noon there will be live music from Lyndsey Craig at Dashwood Square and the fancy dress will be getting judged at the Cree Inn so be sure look out your costumes and enter it. At 12.30 pm the procession makes it way to Dashwood Square where Megan Steele will be crowned Queen of Galloway by Alastair Barnett Esq. and prizes will be awarded for the vehicles and fancy dress. After the crowing ceremony is over we can all join the procession and make our way to the Pageant Pop- Along where there will be loads of entertainment including a Total Wipeout Obstacle Course where teams of 4 can battle it out to be the last team standing. There is also an Equestrian Display Team, West Coast Stompers Line Dancers, Live Music, Fairground Rides, Crisps and Juice, Bouncy Castle, Beer Tent, BBQ, Owl Magic, Uncle Billy, Road Runner, a display for the Fire Brigade and much, much more! Then dust off your glad rags and head to the Official Queen’s Ball/Disco at the Central Bar.
But don’t worry, Pageant doesn’t end there as on Sunday the 29th Of July dominoes will be held in memory of Davie Brown and a new event will be introduced to the Pageant Programme which is Tambourelli. Then on Tuesday 31st of July the Pageant Show jumping Competition will see an end to Pageant for another year but it will come back next year BIGGER AND BETTER as it will be 80 years since the first Galloway Pageant!
