Funfair for Newton Stewart is cancelled
A fairground operator has decided not to attend Newton Stewart this year after concerns were raised over the siting of rides and associated vehicles in Riverside Car Park.
A discussion was held at Cree Valley Community Council’s April meeting over the size of the fair and concerns were raised over the use of the car park. It was agreed to ask Dumfries and Galloway Council, which licenses the event, to find a ‘more suitable’ venue.
However, after investigations by the funfair operators and the community council, it has been decided there is no alternative venue that could accommodate the event.
Troy and Jennyfer Taylor of Taylor’s Pleasure Fairs said this week: “Mr Greenaway very kindly met with us on the evening of the 20th April at short notice and showed us Douglas Park (access makes it unusable) Blairmount Park and Minnigaff Park. Out of the three venues the most suitable was Minnigaff Park. A fence needed to be removed to make way for one of the rides as the parking area was not wide enough. This would have made it possible for the fair to be built up without any heavy lorries on the grass. Unfortunately on the Friday of last week it was decided that the fence couldn’t be removed. Leaving 10 days for a venue to be found.
“We have had to cancel this funfair due to the lack of a suitable venue and at the present time there will be no funfair attending Newton Stewart this year.”
They added: “We as a small family business would like to thank the people of Newton Stewart for their continued support and express our apologies for the cancellation of the funfair, the cause of which is completely outside our control.”
