Food Train Befriending

This has been a very special week for Food Train Friends as they have just recruited their very first volunteers here in the West.

Volunteers are key to supporting older people in our area and help address loneliness through home visits, outings and telephone befriending. They bring the outside world into the home of older people who can’t get out as much as they used to.

Befriending can also be going for a coffee or a walk together, or a trip to the garden centre. If you enjoy spending time with older people, and can spare a couple of hours a week, you could be a volunteer befriender. It’s a great way to meet people, develop skills and share your life experience. You will receive support, training and travel expenses. PVG required.

Food Train Friends is currently recruiting volunteers to cover the DG8 postcode. Tel 01671 401346 or email

Food Train began in Dumfries in 1995 following a community survey of older people that found many of them struggling with their weekly grocery shopping. They operate in six local authorities and are expanding.
