Police are investigating claims of illegal razor clam fishing in Fleet Bay and Carrick Bay.
Information that the practice, involving electrofishing to significantly increase a catch, is being carried out in the Stewartry now as well as Luce Bay came to officers recently and they said this week that they couldn’t proceed without information handed over by members of the public.
The praise comes after an investigation between Police Scotland and Marine Scotland into two boats resulted in the seizure of a haul of razor clams in the Solway last week.
DC Colin Cravens said: “Working as a small ports officer, we understand and see the impact that the illegal razor clam fishing is having on the area. People came to us with information and we acted on it, that’s how we get results like this one.
“It is only with the continued support and assistance of the local communities and Marine Scotland Compliance, can we continue the eradication of the illegal fishing which seems to be taking place in various locations within Dumfries and Galloway area.”
The razor clams illegally caught in Luce Bay are predominately exported to Singapore for onward distribution into the Asian market.
