AN EX-SOLDIER who was caught with £1 million of cannabis in his pick-up truck at Cairnryan Port has been jailed for five years following a two-day trial at Glasgow’s High Court.
Bernard Ryan, 61, was snared by a police sniffer dog at the port in June last year.
The massive haul of herbal cannabis had been hidden under the trailer of his Ford Transit recovery vehicle - a failed technique that saw him hit with a 10 year prison term in Ireland in 2005.
Jailing him, judge Sean Murphy QC said: “You are getting a bit old for this sort of thing.”
Police dog Buster sniffed something suspicious coming from Ryan’s vehicle on 19 June last year during a routine check and heavily wrapped packages were discovered hidden under metal and plywood in a bid to avoid detection.
Ryan claimed he had borrowed the vehicle from a friend and knew nothing about the cannabis.
