Fergusson gets rural affairs

Galloway MSP Alex Fergusson has been appointed to the Scottish Conservative front bench as the party’s Rural Affairs spokesman.

Mr Fergusson said: “I am delighted to have been asked to fulfil this role which has been carried out so ably by my colleague John Scott MSP over the last four years. Agriculture and fisheries still play a vital role in the economy of our region, and I have long believed that you cannot have a successful national economy without a simultaneously buoyant rural economy. “The SNP have proved adept at handling this brief in the last Parliament, but have made many bold statements and promises over the course of the election campaign. With an overall majority, the SNP Government now has no excuses if it fails to deliver on those promises, and it will be my role to hold the Cabinet Secretary to account whenever he fails to do so.

“My party will be supportive of the Government’s position when we believe it is acting in the best interests of rural Scotland, but we will not be afraid to offer constructive criticism to the Government when it is not.”
