Workmen from a Kirkcudbright factory who spotted smoke coming from a nearby garage last week were met with a burning car when they investigated.

The fire at Victoria Place broke out at around 8am and the workmen attacked the fire using a carbon dioxide extinguisher before calling the fire service.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus made their way inside and managed to remove the badly damaged car - which had been stored in the garage for some time - to the open air.

A fire and rescue spokesperson said: “Due to the circumstances surrounding the fire, a joint fire investigation is ongoing with the Fire and Rescue Service and Police.”

Police later confirmed: “Alocal 37 year old female and a local 28 year old male have been reported to the fiscal in connection with after the fire on Victoria Place.”
