Cree Valley and council in floral dance over costs

Cree Valley Community Council are demanding the local authority reveal exactly how much is spent on flowers in Newton Stewart after requests for specific costs went unanswered this week.

Members heard that the council now want communities to fund their own floral displays to cut costs, but did not reveal how much of the £9000 flower budget per annum was spent in the town. The town previously had a display of summer bedding plants that was maintained for 18 weeks by council staff.

Secretary Morag McIlwraith emailed council officials for detailed costs on Monday morning but received no reply by that evening’s meeting. Therefore, the CVCC could not make an informed decision on the way forward.

Elected member Alistair Geddes commented: “The Wigtown Area Committee should have been approached to see if they would put their hands in their pockets to keep the flower beds going while the community get organised.
