Butcher fined for theft from employers

A butcher who was caught stealing money from his employers was fined £1450 at Stranraer Sheriff Court on Tuesday by Sheriff Kenneth Robb.

Robert Clive, 41, from 3 Wigtown Road, Newton Stewart, admitted taking the cash from Frazer’s Butchers shop in Stranraer between November 1 and 30 last year.

Procurator fiscal depute Alison Herald said the shop owner’s wife became aware money was going missing so marked notes with invisible ink. When she saw the accused “with something scrunched up in his hand” go to his coat pocket the
police were alerted and Clive’s coat was searched. The police recovered £98, including marked notes. The accused later repaid a further £400. He was kept on at the shop over Christmas and New Year but was fired in January.

Agent Michael Kilkerr said Clive was under “financial pressure” at the time.
