Busy year for Machars Young Farmers

Following the Machars Young Farmers Club annual general meeting it has been non-stop for the members with many events and activities competed.


Saturday 17th: D&G Talent Spot at Lochside Theatre in Castle Douglas with Wigtownshire YF’s entry of Twa Nithin Yin Twa (2012). Machars members consisted of Bobby and Katie Landers, Libby and Robert Templeton, Leona Wallace, Ilise Spice, Eilidh Parker, Tom Bell and Colin Ferguson as the music maestro.

Wednesday 21st: D&G Club of the Year. Machars came first on the night with Bobby Landers and Colin Ferguson.

Friday 23rd: Wigtownshire AGM and concert night at the Kelvin House Hotel, Glenluce. The new committee for 2012/13 is chairman Kenneth Dunlop, secretary Ian Kirkpatrick and treasurer Colin Ferguson.


Sunday 1st: D&G rugby 7s at Stewartry Rugby Club. Machars placed second on the day with a team of Bobby Landers, Mark and William McCornick, Sam Thomson, Jack Ritchie, David Sommerville and Colin Ferguson.

Sunday 8th: Blood donors were in Newton Stewart and members were encouraged to brave the needle and give a pint. Those of the club who attended were Tom Bell, Colin Ferguson, Libby Templeton and Leona Wallace.

Sunday 8th: New members night at Kirkinner Hall. A good turnout was had with new and present members getting together for team games.

Monday 9th: Wigtownshire YF cheque presentation to the Scottish Cot Death Trust with Machars representatives being Bobby Landers, Tom Bell, Libby Templeton, Colin Ferguson and Ilise Spice.

Saturday 14th: Crossraods YFC football and netball tournament at Loudon Academy, Galston. Machars entered a netball team of Katie Landers, Ilise Spice, Eilidh Parker, Robyn Chalmers, Caera Morton, Emily Nash, Fay Wallace and Leah Forsyth. The girls were fifth on the day. A football team of Bobby Landers, Simon McCornick, Willem McKie, Michael Brown, Stuart Wallace, Stuart Mactier and Dean Penrose was unfortunately unplaced.

Friday 20th: Stewartry YFC held their annual spring dance at Lochview Motel. A great turnout from Machars and all attending had an enjoyable night.

Sunday 22nd: Sports night at Port William Astroturf. A large attendance was received with many new faces taking part.

Monday 30th: New competition took place – D&G Country Cooks, this was in a Ready Steady Cook style. Machars entered two teams: Team A was Colin Ferguson and Tom Bell, Team B was Morag MacDonald and Bob Stead. Both were unplaced on the night but all competing made a great effort as well as a scrummy main course.


Friday 4th: Annandale sports night which involved football for the boys and hockey for the girls. Machars entered a football team of Simon McCornick, Gregor Cannon, Dean Penrose, Bobby Landers, William and Craig McKie and Stuart Mactier which came second.

Saturday 5th: National Club of the Year interviews which took place at the YF Centre in Ingliston. Bobby Landers and Colin Ferguson represented.

Sunday 6th: D&G stockmanship practice began with two beef classes at Reiffer Park by permission of James Forsyth. Followed by two sheep and two dairy classes at Broughton Mains by kind permission of Andy MacKay. A large attendance from Machars was made up of Bobby and Katie Landers, Colin Ferguson, Libby and Robert Templeton, Ilise Spice, Caera Morton, Tom Bell, Chloe and Simon McCornick, Alistair Birse, William Moses and Kirtsy Wilson. It is hoped more people would be interested in taking part in this event and encouraging more to have a go.

Wednesday 9th: A letter was recieved informing the club that it was successful in the club of the year interview and shortlisted for the final three, with the winning club being announced on Saturday, June 23, 6pm at the YF Centre at the Royal Highland Show 2012.

Saturday 12th: Ayr Show – A Junior Handicrafts team was entered with the theme being Halloween. The team consisted of Katie Landers, Eilidh Parker, Emily and Rose Nash and Fay Wallace. A fantastic display was presented by the team and the were placed fifth.

A junior stockjudging team of Eilidh Parker, Katie Landers and Ilise Spice was unluckily not placed on the day and it was the same for the senior stockjudging team of Bobby Landers, Simon McCornick and Tom Bell.

Machars YFC is always open to new members and would like to invite anyone aged 14-30 to come along. Upcoming events are a sports night on Sunday, May 20, at Bladnoch Park, 7pm. On Saturday, May 26, Machars YFC will be hosting D&G district rally at Bladnoch park. This is a full-day which has a variety of competitions.
