On saturday, November 14, Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited favoured with the instructions of AK McConchie & Co, Mains of Penninghame, Newton Stewart dispersed the Penninghame Herd of Galloway cattle as well as the commercial herd of Salers cross sucklers.
With no fewer than 451 herd of stock passing through the ring this was one of the biggest sales of its type to be held in Castle Douglas in recent times. Active buyers were present from Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales resulting in a fantastic trade throughout. All stock were shown in top form and were a great credit to the sellers.
The Penninghame Galloway herd was especially sought after with some of the finest bloodlines in the UK being held in this herd. The current Galloway female record price was blown away when Lot No 12 Penninghame Susan, with a heifer calf at foot, passed through the ring at 8500gns firmly establishing a new record price. She was knocked down in a joint deal to Messrs J & A Finlay, Blackcraig and Mr Robert Marshall, Glenrinnies. Next up at 3800gns was Penninghame Rhapsody with her bull calf at foot selling to Messrs McClymont, Kirkstead. Also at 3800gns was the five year old stock bull Kirkmabreck Upstart which sold to Mr J Robertson, Becks. Bulling heifers sold to 3400gns for Penninghame Vera which sold to J and S Ross & Son, Romesbeoch, Shawhead.
The buoyant trade continued through the commercial cattle as well. Topping the sucklers at £2900 was a 4 year old Salers cross cow with her spring born heifer calf at foot which sold to Mr Cunningham, Islay – Autumn Calving Salers Cows with calves topped at £1800 for a 5 year old cow with a heifer calf. In-Calf heifers sold to £1950 whilst bullers topped at £1380. Stock Bulls were also keenly bid for selling to £4000 for Whitebog Ensign which sold to Mr J Martin, Swinlees, Dalry.
