The bell tolls for the red phone box in Galloway as BT rings the changes in this era of mobile messaging.

The communications titan wants to cut back the number of phone boxes they maintain due to declining use.

At Wigtown Community Council’s monthly meeting on Monday night in the County Buildings, members were consulted on the proposed closure of phone boxes in Bladnoch and Kirkinner.

There was a suggestion that the communities involved could take over the phone boxes, for a nominal sum, to use a community facility rather then have the iconic phone boxes removed. BT is required to inform Dumfries and Galloway Council of its proposed closures and, in turn, the council must consult local community councils.

Other phone boxes on the disconnect list are at Bridge of Aldouran, Leswalt; Church Road, Kirkcolm; Belmont Road, Stranraer; Station Road, New Luce; Auchenmalg; Orchard Road, Dunragit; Main Street, Glenluce; St Stephen’s, Stoneykirk; Main Street, Lochans; Main Street, Isle of Whithorn; Glentrool; St Couan’s Crescent, Kirkcowan; St Couan’s Place, Newton Stewart; Murray Place, Minnigaff; Woodside Square, Minnigaff; Douglas Terrace, Newton Stewart; Palnure; Main Street, Sorbie; Dundrennan; Dovecroft, Kirkcudbright; Burnbank, Twynholm; High Street, Gatehouse; Riverbank, Gatehouse; Borgue; High Street, New Galloway and Carsphairn.
