We are approaching the one-year mark since we launched our campaign to gather donated bras. In that time, you’ve handed in 3000 - our target for the year.
The bras we’ve been gathering have been collected by Fed Ex and taken to BCR Global Textile’s central depots across the country. BCR, which helps small businesses in Africa through its textile project, is preventing valuable textiles going to landfill giving them a new lease of life in developing countries across Africa where bras remain too expensive to produce.
When you make a deposit at a Bra Bank, your illfitting or unwanted bras will be whisked away to start a new life on the other side of the world, where traders support their families selling textiles locally. Successful ventures like this keep many families in developing countries out of poverty whilst providing employment for people at home in the UK.
The company also donated £1000 to breast cancer research projects for every tonne of bras collected - but it takes around 9000 bras to make a tonne.
So our bank is contributing hugely to both the African economy and to breast cacner research here in the UK.
We will continue to collect your bras as an ongoing project so please keep them coming! You can hand them in to our Newton Stewart office between 9am-5pm Monday to Thursday and 9am-3pm on Fridays.
