Benefit claimant guilty of fraud

A benefit claimant was found guilty of benefit fraud at Dumfries Sheriff Court this week and was sentenced to a community payback order, with a supervision period of one year.

Lorraine MacCuish, 31, of 19 Dalswinton Avenue, Dumfries, admitted that she obtained benefit to which she was not entitled by failing to disclose that she had been living with a partner for a period of approximately one year. The charge related to overpayments of housing/council tax benefit, Jobeeker’s Allowance and Income Support totalling £6292.57, which were recoverable in full.

The latest figures for 2012/2013 indicate that £1.2 billion, of total benefit expenditure is overpaid due to fraud.
