Authority collects highest ever council tax

A report outlining the amount of council tax and rates collected by Dumfries and Galloway Council will be reported this week.

At the Policy and Resources committee on Friday (18 July), councillors will be told that the authority has achieved its highest ever collection rates for both council tax (96%) and for non-domestic rates (98.3%).

In addition, the council’s Financial Inclusion and Assessment Team assisted 2560 people in claiming additional welfare benefits and awards totalling £6.35 million.

Council Leader, Ronnie Nicholson said: “Our council has a responsibility to constituents to maximise council tax and non-domestic rates collection, as well as ensuring that any money owed for other services are paid. Our council has an effective process in place to ensure that this is carried out which is demonstrated by our highest ever collection rates.

“Unfortunately however, there are also people who are not in a position to pay their debts to the council. In challenging economic times, there are instances where there is no realistic chance of recovering the debt and unfortunately as a last resort we have to write these off.”
