Anger at rise in jobless numbers

Anger has been voiced at new figures that show unemployment continuing to rise across Galloway.

The figures released by the Office of National Statistics show the overall number of jobseekers in the region increased from 2695 (2.9% of the population) to 2740 (3%) while the figures for youth unemployment show an increase from 705 in January (6.4%) to 740 (6.7%) – 1% above the Scottish average and 1.5% above the British average.

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown said: “When will the UK government wake up and realise that our region is facing a jobs crisis? These figures are getting worse, yet the UK government goes on about its economic recovery.”

And MSP Elaine Murray added: “It is upsetting to see the number of young people claiming benefits has risen. Neither the UK nor the Scottish government seems prepared to tackle the issue head on.”
