500 Miles to beat cancer

With just under two weeks remaining until the inaugural Dumfries 500, organisers are delighted at the positive response from teams and supporters, and urge anyone interested in joining them to come forward and register.

The event, which takes place in Dumfries on Saturday 23 August, will raise vital funds for the work of Cancer Research UK – the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research, whose pioneering work into prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer has helped save millions of lives.

But with one in three people still being diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, more than 120 individuals have signed up in teams to undertake the challenge of collectively walking 500 miles (per team) over the period of 12 hours. The route, which will shortly be announced, covers a five mile circuit through Dumfries town centre, with shorter sections so that the circuit can be completed in relay-style should anyone wishing to participate be unable to walk a full lap. Team members are challenging themselves to walk up to 20 miles in teams of 25 people.

The event offers something for all the family with stalls and live entertainment in the town centre from 11am until 6pm. Those who are not in teams are welcome to bring their picnic and soak up the atmosphere whilst cheering participants as they cross the start/finish line for each circuit.

Jim Campbell, chairman of Dumfries 500 said, “we are just delighted with the support we’ve received for the fundraising event so far and we hope many others will sign up to undertake the challenge and raise money for Cancer Research UK over the coming weeks. It’s a family event and everyone is welcome to help create a world with more birthdays.”

Registration costs £10 (£5 under 16’s – who must be accompanied by an adult) and those interested in registering a team, joining an existing team, volunteering or supporting in any way should contact Fiona McKean or Sylvia Campbell on dumfries500@gmail.com or by phoning 01387 248745. Please join in and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
