The countdown is on for schools taking part in this year’s Xmas Factor Carol Singing Competition, which saw Whithorn Primary knocked from its running streak by Palnackie last year.

The contest is open to primary schools in Dumfries and Galloway and has a top prize of £500 and a trophy, with £50 each for the four runners-up.

The deadline for the first round of the competition is Tuesday 4 November, by which date the schools need to have sent in a recording of their choir singing one of a choice of eight carols.

A judging panel initially shortlists 10 schools and this list is put to a public vote to decide the final fivewho will compete at Gretna Gateway Outlet Village on Sunday 7 December.
