The Royal Burgh of Wigtown and District Community Council paid a special tribute to its most loyal member Betty McGowan MBE on Monday evening.
Convenor Matt Kitson commented that Betty was renowned locally as someone who made thing happen and was prepared to stand up for what she believed in.
Long time associate, Mid Galloway councillor Jim McColm, said he had been in awe of Betty’s organising skills since the 1960s and she has served the community council faithfully since 1976.
Community councillor Willie McCartney said: “Betty will be missed. She was the boss. What she said went and that was it.”
Fellow member Nick Walker presented Betty with an engraved flower vase and Betty thanked everyone graciously replying that she had been “proud and honoured to serve the community council.”
Mrs McGowan has only retired from the community council, she remains active in other community organisations in the town.
