Following the success of the past season Gatehouse Music Society is looking forward to the start of the new one which opens on Thursday, November 3, at 7.30pm with Swing 2016.

John Russell, guitar/vocals, Seonaid Aitken, violin/vocals, Roy Percy, double bass and Stephen Coutts, guitar are a quartet of talented and experienced musicians, under the leadership of John Russell who formed the original Swing band in 1980.

They have caught the attention of their audiences with their easygoing and informative presentation and the verve, musicality and good humour of the music.

John who is a former member of the Scottish Jazz All Stars, has specialised in the art of rhythm playing and has accompanied many famous British and visiting foreign musicians.

A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Seonaid, has been thrilling and charming audiences at festivals worldwide, and is the latest addition to the group. She is known locally to many Kirkcudbright Jazz Festival enthusiasts for her role as lead singer of ‘Rose Room’.

Stephen whose early training was in classical violin brings some of that discipline to his playing. He was a close colleague of the late great Stéphane Grappelli and has played with many of the jazz greats both in Europe and America.

It will be a welcome return for Roy Percy whose playing we have enjoyed with the Tim Kliphuis Trio. As well as touring UK and European Festivals Roy has been a frequent transatlantic visitor and here at home he has backed many visiting international jazz musicians.

The quartet will perform music from Stéphane Grappelli, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Jerome Kern, among others.

This is an open event and will take place in Gatehouse Parish Church at 7.30pm. Non members can buy tickets at the door and students and school children are free.
