Unexpectedly, the rain cleared on Saturday morning and the predicted snow had passed further north so 21 ramblers assembled at Glenluce Abbey in the weak winter sunshine.
Storm Gertrude still provided a strong, cool gale but the valley was relatively sheltered. We set off along the road above the river, past a field of friendly donkeys and up to the Gabsnout Bridge. Fortunately, it did not seem to be running too strongly.
The group turned off the trackway and struggled across the deep heather and boggy hollows to the cairn at the summit of Gleniron Fell. Next week’s event on Saturday 6th February will be a moderate 8 mile circular walk in the western Machars starting from the Chapel Finian car park on the A747 (NX 279 489). Meet at the Breastworks car park in Stranraer at 09:00 or the Riverside Car Park in Newton Stewart at 09:30 to share transport. New walkers or if going direct to the start, please contact 01776 700707.
