The Cairnsmore of Fleet Nature Reserve is hosting the very best of traditional Scottish folk music and an outdoor theatre spectacular this Sunday (21 July).
‘The Big Event’ will feature the outstanding Fèis Rois musicians from The National Ceilidh Trail tour and a performance of ‘Pollen’ by acclaimed dance/theatre company Oceanallover.
The free fun supports the region’s Year of Natural Scotland 2013 celebrations and is funded by Creative Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). And it is also part of the first ever Environmental Art Festival Scotland being held in Dumfries and Galloway.
Inspired by the marvellous shapes in the microscopic forms of pollen, Oceanallover’s latest theatrical production is about growth and the migration of ideas explored through dance and spectacular costume. Starting at 3pm, this contemporary drama will involve around 20 performance artists. It will be staged on the move around the reserve, against the magnificent backdrop of the wild upland landscape.
Kicking off the event, the Fèis Rois musicians will be performing two driving tune sets of their beautifully-crafted songs before and after the ‘Pollen’ performance at 2pm and 4pm. These exceptional young musicians have been selected for The National Ceilidh Trail summer tour – a professional development opportunity for young traditional musicians to develop their performance skills and experience life as touring artists.
Trevor Godden from SNH said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for locals and visitors alike to enjoy an amazing afternoon’s entertainment in one of south-west Scotland’s wildest and most dramatic landscapes. And what’s more, it’s all for free!”
The event runs from 1.30pm to 5pm with free entry and parking and is suitable for all ages. Those attending are advised to wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear, and to bring their own refreshments or a picnic.
Cairnsmore of Fleet NNR is off the B796, eight miles from Gatehouse of Fleet and seven miles from Creetown.
