Penninghame Primary School Eco Committee were recently awarded a Green Flag after an inspection visit by Eco Schools Scotland. The school have 16 children of all ages on the committee and have been working hard for two years on their three chosen topics: Litter, School Grounds and Energy.
As part of the programme, the children need to be involved in taking minutes, keeping the rest of the school updated at Assemblies etc, involving the wider community and generally improving their knowledge and understanding of the topics. Some examples of their work include planting new trees in the grounds, setting up a birdwatching area, litter monitoring and litter picking at breaktimes, a litter pick of the River Cree and around Blairmount and the woods, and monitoring energy usage in the school. The committee is led by Jennifer Armstrong and Rachael McQuarrie, teachers in the school.
Mrs Armstrong siad: “The children wowed our inspector and we are delighted to be able to display our new flag!”
