When Glenapp Castle’s Graham Cowan arrived in Relais & Châteaux’s London Head Office this week for a quarterly steering committee meeting, he was surprised, and very pleased, to be met by a barrage of ‘congratulations’ from his colleagues, some of the UK’s most eminent hoteliers – but he had no idea what for!
It turned out that an early release copy of the 2015 edition of the prestigious ‘Good Food Guide’, had found its way to Relais & Châteaux in London, and that Tyron Ellul, Glenapp’s head chef, had not only received the very high score of six in the review section, but had also been highlighted by name in the guide’s introduction, as being one of only three young ‘Chefs to Watch’ in the whole of the UK. The other two chefs, Gareth Ward of Ynyshir Hall and Jordan Annabi, of Airds Hotel, are also head chefs in Relais & Châteaux Hotels, so all in all, a very good day for the association.
On returning to Glenapp Castle, Graham discovered that Tyron’s copy of the guide had not arrived, and was able to break the good news to him with a photo of page seven of the guide, which reads: “And when Tyron Ellul emerged from the kitchen of Glenapp Castle, displaying an impressive set of skills and a sure sense of what’s delicious, there was no doubt in our minds – these are definitely young chefs to watch.”
Graham said: “This is a fantastic achievement for a young chef, in his first head chef’s role – to be singled out by such an important and respected guide as the ‘Good Food Guide’ as a ‘chef to watch’ – it’s certainly a first for Glenapp, and we have had some very impressive head chefs over the years. For Tyron and his team, in the middle of a very busy season, this is a huge boost. It was a real pleasure to see their faces when I told them, and no doubt there will be some celebrating tonight.”
