Just over fifty years ago, on April 30, 1966, the late Peter Adams, Clugston Farm, Kirkcowan, rode the winner of the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr Racecourse.

Peter and his brother Sandy, who now lives at the Grange of Bladnoch, trained Blue Venom on the family farm at Torhousekie. The brothers bought the gelding for £250 from a trainer who warned them: “You’ll never win anything with him.”

But after being fed on a gallon of milk a day and used to round up the sheep as part of his training regime, he won five races on the bounce, culminating with the Scottish Champion Hurdle.
