Children’s charity, Barnardo’s Scotland, is inviting people in Ayrshire to come along to the Galloway Activity Centre on 10 and 11 September 2016 for a weekend of fun-filled water sports.
The weekend’s water extravaganza involves two very different water-sports to take part in, the Loch Ken ‘Wild Swim’ on Saturday 10 September and a Dragon Boat Race on Sunday 11 September, both in aid of Barnardo’s Scotland.
Event organiser, Richard Hermon from the Galloway Activity Centre, said: “We’re really excited to hold the Wild Swim again this year for Barnardo’s Scotland. Last year the demand was so high for the Loch Ken Swim we decided to add a Dragon Boat race as another unique way to fundraise for this worthy cause. We hope everyone will join in the fun with us!”
Participants taking part in the Wild Swim have three distances to choose from, a 4k, 2k or 1k swim. There’s an event for children too which involves swimming over or around several obstacles – water fun for the whole family. Entry fee for the Wild Swim is £22, £10 for the children’s swim. Entries for the Wild Swim close Wednesday 7 September. Every participant will receive a t-shirt, hot drink and snack. If you would like to take part in the Wild Swim event, please visit www.sientries.co.uk
The Dragon Boat race is organised by local rowers in Galloway ‘Dragon Boats on Loch Ken’ the first ever permanent Dragon Boat Racing team in Scotland established in 2010. Their aim is to both support local people recovering from cancer and to offer an alternative sporting activity to anyone who would like to take up Dragon Boating as a way to keep fit and enjoy a new interest. This is the first time a Dragon Boat race has taken place at the Galloway Activity Centre, the event is open to any organisation, colleagues or friends who would like to enter a team.
Entry for the Dragon Boat race is £50 per team; teams are encouraged to collect further sponsorship for Barnardo’s Scotland. Entries for the Race close 28 August.
Events coordinator for Barnardo’s Scotland, Jordyn Armstrong, said: “We’re delighted that the Galloway Activity Centre is choosing to support Barnardo’s Scotland at their Wild Swim and Dragon Boat event again this year. Richard and his team did a fantastic job in raising over £1,000 for Barnardo’s Scotland last year, we’re really grateful to the people who took part in the event for their continued support.
“We were very impressed by the number of participants in the Wild Swim last year, and advising anyone thinking of taking part to get their entry in sooner than later. We’re really looking forward to introducing Dragon Boat racing to this year’s weekend event, teams from Aberdeen, Glasgow and Arbroath, competing in our Edinburgh Dragon Boat Race had a fantastic time. We hope families, colleagues and friends in Ayrshire will come along to join us, it really does promise to be a great weekend!”
