What better way to spend a bleak January afternoon than by listening to a programme of ravishing music performed by a group of brilliant musicians?
The newton Stewart and District Music Club opened their first concert of 2016 with a wonderfully entertaining programme from the Ferio Saxophone Quartet, in the final concert of their Scottish tour sponsored by the Tunnell Trust.
The widely varied repertoire of the programme show-cased the diverse range and character of the saxophone, ranging from the familiar solidarity of baroque, the elegance of classical melodies, the vibrant tempo of Latin rhythms, to the challenging diversity of contemporary music, and this talented quartet showed complete virtuosity in all genres.
Ad well as a sustained warm tone, the ensemble had breath-taking dexterity and clear crisp articulation, not to mention a dazzling command of some extraordinary extended techniques, with glissandi, growling, not-bending and some very effective slap-tonguing.
Newton Stewart Music Club must be congratulated for bringing such super live music to our town.
The next concert will be the Edinburgh duo, on Sunday, February 28, at 3pm, in the Cinema. Not to be missed.
