The Newton Stewart Singers were delighted when, last Autumn, Michael Appleford agreed to take the baton for two concerts of Christmas music.
Following the success of these the Singers were thrilled when Michael accepted the position as the choir’s Musical Director. They are now about to take up the challenge he has thrown down.
On Sunday April 27, at the Church of Our Lady and St Ninian, Newton Stewart, they will tackle the ambitious programme of music appropriate for Easter which he has chosen. It contains two contrasting settings of the Stabat Mater, one by Pergolesi, they other by Schubert. The soloists in the earlier work are the soprano Nicola Junor, who delighted listeners with her performance last year in Vivaldi’s Gloria, and the counter-tenor Michael Deakin, whom the choir is eager to welcome for the first time. The accompaniment will be keyboard and string quartet.
In addition to these two works there will be shorter pieces by other composers including Caccini and Stravinsky.
The evening offers listeners the chance to hear a choir tackling a wide variety of pieces under an experienced conductor whom they find both demanding and exciting and whom they look forward to working with.
Please look out for posters giving details of the musical treat.
