National ‘Book Town’ Treasure Betty McGowan, MBE, has decided to call it a day after serving for 35 years on the town’s community council.

Her letter of retiral was read out at Monday evening’s meeting of The Royal Burgh of Wigtown and District Community Council by convenor Nick Walker.

Mr Walker paid tribute to Betty’s dedication to orgaising events in the town over that time, something, he added “she was very good at”, saying that the community council were grateful for her “substantial efforts on behalf of the community for a long, long time”.

Betty was keen to point out that she was just retiring from the community council but would still be fully involved in other community projects in Wigtown such as Wigtown in Bloom and the Community Shop.
