£2.8m fundraising target reached to redevelop Whithorn town hall
The team behind the redevelopment of the historic New Town Hall in Whithorn have reached their £2.8m funding target.
Members of the All Roads Lead to Whithorn charitable trust have confirmed that their four-year effort to complete a portfolio of funders has been successfully completed.
They plan to announce details of the final substantial contribution later in the spring.
3b Construction, which has a depot at Port William, has been awarded the contract after a tendering process and work is set to start in June.
A spokesperson said: “The volunteers at the All Roads Trust have worked for the last four years to accumulate the funds necessary for the contract and design team, and have just signed off on the Community Asset Transfer of the building.
"This represents the largest single investment in Whithorn's history. Works are expected to last for a year and the public will be kept informed of the plans, schedule and mitigations where there may be impacts, which will be reduced to the minimum possible.
"We are particularly pleased that we are able to award the contract locally, supporting the employment of local workers and new apprentices.”
The restoration retains original front features of the building but inside will see a major reconstruction featuring a community hall, kitchens and a well-equipped mezzanine sports and fitness floor.
At the rear of the complex will be a purpose-built bunkhouse providing affordable accommodation.
Dumfries and Galloway MP Alister Jack said: "The trust members and their company secretary Julia Muir-Watt have worked tirelessly to take this project forward, which I know was extremely challenging at times.
"I'm absolutely delighted that work has been rewarded with construction set to begin in June and could be completed as soon as late next year.
"The project preserves a landmark building in Whithorn, but will also be a great community asset and further visitor attraction in this scenic and historically significant part of my constituency."
