Galloway Association of Glasgow donate over £24K in 2015
Once again Netherlee Parish Church Glasgow was the venue on Saturday 5 March 2016 for the Annual General Meeting of The Galloway Association of Glasgow.
Prior to the commencement of the AGM Association Trustee Professor Alastair McGowan introduced the guest speaker of the evening Professor Donald Cowell. Don is an Association member who lives in Borgue Kirkcudbrightshire – he is actively involved in a number of Galloway groups such as the Kirkcudbright History Society, Stewartry U3A and the National Trust of Scotland. Don’s most interesting and informative power point presentation ‘The Will of William Johnston’ was based on the recent work he carried out for the Stewartry Museum in Kirkcudbright on the unusual Will of William Johnston – a local merchant who died in 1845 and who founded the Johnston Free School in Kirkcudbright. At the conclusion of which Don ably answered questions put to him by members attending. A vote of thanks was delivered by Professor McGowan.
President Angus Rex then took the chair to deliver his Annual Report followed by reports by Treasurer Alan Edgar and Secretary Anne Rankin. At the conclusion of the Treasurer’s Report Angus informed the meeting that at the end of 2015 Alan had indicated his intention to retire as Association Honorary Treasurer as of AGM 5 March.
At this point Angus expressed his and the Association’s sincere thanks to Alan for his significant contribution to the Association over the past twenty years and presented Alan with a Whisky Decanter and Glasses suitably engraved with the Association’s Logo together with a bottle of Alan’s favourite whisky. A floral arrangement was presented to Alan’s wife Jean for her continued support over the years.
In recognition of Alan’s contribution to the Association, the Trustees awarded Alan the title ‘Honorary President’.
On behalf of Jean and himself Alan thanked the Association for their generous gifts and good wishes on his ‘retirement’.
Secretary Anne Rankin then stood to deliver her Annual Report which included the date and venue of this years’ Social Events – Spring Outing Friday 6th May to The Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum followed by afternoon tea a nearby Kilnford Barns Farm Shop and Restaurant.
This year the Association celebrates it’s 225th Anniversary with a special Dinner to be held at The Cally Palace Hotel Gatehouse of Fleet on Sunday 2nd October when it is hoped as many members and friends would attend.
During 2015 the Association has awarded £24,550 to Iindividuals and organisations throughout the Galloway area.
