Young cricketers win cup tie

GALLOWAY Cricket Club’s under-13 team travelled to Kingholm last Friday night to take on St Michael’s Cricket Club in a Scottish Cup match.

Batting first were Wigtownshire pair, skipper Lochlan Hughes and Russell Morton, who was making his debut.

They started brightly, with Russell hitting one particularly impressive shot through square leg for four.

Although they batted very well together, playing some fantastic shots at times, variable bowling meant that it was hard for the batsmen to lay bat on ball. As Galloway gave almost everyone in their team a chance with the bat, the majority of the batters retired not out.

The home side’s bowling improved towards the end of the Galloway innings, and a couple of wickets fell, and Galloway’s innings closed after their allotted 20 overs with the score on 90 for two.

Archie McCreath, Ali Hannay and Raphael all looked quite stylish at the crease.

In reply, the home side struggled at first against the pace of Glen Montgomery and Robert Ramsay, with a couple of the home players clean-bowled, and Joe Strain was his usual accurate self.

With Finlay Johnstone, Hamish Ramsey and Lochlan Spence performing well in the field, the home side’s efforts seemed in vain. However, a late flurry from Connor, the home team’s captain, hitting some fine pull shots, brought some hope until a run-out all but extinguished their hopes. Galloway went on to win by 15 runs, St Michael’s being 75 for five at the close.

The Galloway lads now travel to Kilmarnock in the next round where there will, more than likely, be a tougher match in prospect.

All the same, it was a good performance from the youngsters.

A lot of the youngsters playing, including the St Michael’s boys and some of the cream from Dumfires CC and Lockerbie CC, will be playing in regional matches at under-12 and under-14 level at East Kilbride and Galloway CC respectively on Sunday. If anyone fancies coming along to the ground and showing the local boys support, there is bound to be a cup of tea and a cake on offer.

If anyone is interested in playing for fun, fitness or on a more serious level, including juniors, men and women, please contact Howard Bradley on 07950545993 or Mary Hughes 07809226992.
