Wigtownshire Sports Council to discuss reclaiming grants

At the recent annual general meeting of Wigtownshire Sports Council, chairman Brain Park reported on a successful year, including the annual sports personality awards in March recognising the achievements of local sportspeople at local, national and international level.

The Sports Council distributed grants to five clubs and sixteen athletes during the year to assist with purchase of equipment, travel to training and competitions in a wide variety of sports, including golf, curling, swimming, bowling, Highland Dancing, motocross, rally driving, showjumping and shooting.

It is a condition of receipt of grant that recipients attend the annual ceneral meeting to report on how it has helped them in their sport. Although letters were sent to all grant recipients to remind them only a few turned up and this will be discussed by the new committee at their next meeting as monies may have to be reclaimed due to the grant award conditions not being met.

At the AGM, Brian Park was re-elected as chairman, with Jim Hayes elected as vice-chairman.

The Sports Council receives an annual grant from Dumfries & Galloway Council to disburse to local sportspeople and clubs. Anyone who would like to know more about the grants available should contact the Sports Council - for more information, go to the website: wigtownshiresportscouncil.co.uk
