Wigtownshire guns at Glenkens

The Glenkens Gun Club annual Clay Pigeon Shoot was held on Saturday, May 4 at Craighead Farm, Dalry by kind permission of the Peacock family.

A good turnout of 31 guns took part in the competition on a dry but bitterly cold day more reminiscent of February weather than May with the extreme windy conditions providing some testing targets. Competition was keen but the day was dominated by Peter MacKay from Inverness who is a Scottish Internationalist of some note and who proved his skill by winning the Lorimer Trophy for the full day with a score of 142 ex 150. He also won the McCrone Shield for the best score in Events 2 two and three with a clean score of 75 ex 75, and the Coupland Cup for Event three, again on a full house. It was worth his while coming down on holiday to plunder the silverware from the Lowlanders! The Brian Vincent Rosebowl for best score of the day from any shooter never classified “A” or “AA” at Down-the-Line was won by Peter Allison with a score of 130 ex 150 and the Carruthers Cup for the runner-up in this section was won by Jimmy Little close behind on 128 ex 150. There was a bit of an upset this year for the Committee Cups with D W B regaining the Carnochan Cup for Events two and three from J M P who has held it for many years, however John managed to hang on to the Kyle Cup for Events two, three and four. The side trap was as usual keenly contested but the McNaught Trophy went to David McCulloch who beat Andy McLeod in the shoot-off.
